5 Principles of a Shaman
My friend, teacher and guide, Tony, a Shaman from Venezuela.
The wisdom of the shaman is something that has been passed down to me through deep teachings and personal experience. My journey into shamanism was guided by a respected elders from both Peruvian Quechua tradition and Venezuelan Tribú who shared with me not only the teachings of the spirit but also the simple, yet profound practices that allow one to live in harmony with all of life. These are the core principles that I have come to embrace and live by as I continue my daily life:
Take Nothing Personally
Even the most skilled and experienced Shaman cannot see the full plan for the another man’s soul. We are all here with different intentions, following individual paths, on our own speed and experiences, and thus each of us perceives the world from their own perspective. The way another person acts, even towards us, is therefore his own doing and his own projection and reaction towards the reality of his own. It has nothing to do with us. Thank him and let it pass.
Nonviolence
Nonviolence isn’t just about avoiding harm in our actions; it extends to our thoughts and feelings. Violence arises from a sense of separation and fear. A shaman knows that we are all connected and that every act of violence, whether physical or mental, distances us from the unity of existence. We are taught not to take ourselves too seriously and to refrain from judging others. True peace begins within.Integrity
To live with integrity means to align our actions with our vision and purpose. A shaman doesn’t simply talk about their path—they live it. This involves being true to what we stand for, even when no one is watching. When we align with truth, we feel a sense of strength and power that resonates deeply in our being.Moderation
Shamanic teachings emphasize the importance of balance. Extremes, whether in thought, action, or behavior, do not serve us. I’ve learned to approach life with a sense of moderation—avoiding excess and seeking balance in all things.Generosity
Generosity is the act of giving freely, without expecting anything in return. It comes from the heart and brings true value to our lives. A shaman understands that when we give with love and humility, we create a flow of energy that not only benefits others but enriches our own spirit. Generosity is not about material wealth, but about offering love, care, and kindness from a place of abundance.
Living the Shamanic Path
These five principles guide me every day. I’ve learned that it’s not just about the ceremonies or rituals—it’s about how we live in each moment. It’s about how we pray deeply each day, how we connect with nature, how we breathe, and how we honor the elements. It’s about feeling the water, listening to the wind, and trusting the process of life as it unfolds.
One of the greatest teachings I received was to trust that everything will always be fine, no matter what challenges come. We don’t need to know everything in advance; we simply need to pray with purpose, live with humility, and be patient for the gifts of the Great Spirit to arrive.
